About Modern Painters, New Decorators

Modern Painters, New Decorators is an artist-led organisation running a gallery, shop and studios from a shopping centre in Loughborough, East Midlands. We believe that artists can positively impact where we live and why we live there. We make visual art projects, community workshops and creative networks. Since 2017 we have held 19 exhibitions and worked with over 40 contemporary artists. Our exhibitions present newly produced work by emerging practitioners, with a particular focus on sculpture and installation. In 2022 we carried out our first year-long programme, ‘ Archive Fever’, funded by Arts Council England and Leicestershire County Council, in partnership with Leicestershire Museums Collection. Over eleven months, we hosted four solo exhibitions, ran two workshop streams with families and young people, streamed a video series and produced a publication. This programme has informed the project we are now developing, where we will explore new production methods, further integrate partnership work and expand our learning programme.

Role description

We’re looking for a proactive, skilled and organised individual to lead facilities operations to help deliver our new Arts Council England funded project, ‘Signs of Life’. We will commission visual art by emerging artists and deliver an accompanying programme of creative workshops with local young people and families, responding to the graphics, signs and symbols of our shopping centre location. Our Programme & Facilities Technician will also work on our additional programmes, working with members and residencies.

We’re a small organisation where every team member is essential and multiskilled, bringing their unique contributions and skills and delivering on broader activities. The Programmes & Facilities Technician will be responsible for installing projects, ensuring they are carried out to an industry-level standard, to facilitate high-quality cultural experiences. They will oversee the practical aspects of our shop, gallery and studios, maintaining the spaces to a high standard, and helping to create a welcoming environment in the gallery. The Programme & Facilities Technician will work alongside the rest of the team, supporting exhibitions and events and staffing our shop. They will also be responsible for inducting and managing any front-of-house volunteer teams.

As the Programme & Facilities Technician will work with communities with various needs and of different ages, we require the post holder to follow our safeguarding policy, prioritising the welfare of children, young people, and vulnerable adults. The chosen candidate must obtain a successful DBS check to carry out this role.
