Abbey Pumping Station and the Environment

Leicester Museums & Galleries are inviting a Leicester and Leicestershire based artist to develop an artwork with Leicester’s Industrial Museum, Abbey Pumping Station.

The commissioned artist will be encouraged to bring new perspectives and ideas responding to Abbey Pumping Station’s objects, considering themes of industrialisation, the environment, sustainability and water usage. The resulting artwork will be displayed in Leicester’s Highcross Shopping Centre.

The commissioned artist will also need to develop an engagement session to complement their artwork(s). This session should be inspired by Abbey Pumping Station and associated themes of industrial technology, water management and climate change. The engagement session will be delivered at either Abbey Pumping Station or Highcross Shopping Centre during the Easter School Holiday, between Tuesday 11th and Saturday 15th April 2023. The location will be confirmed in agreement with the selected artist.

Artists interested in submitting an expression of interest are invited to provide:

  • Artist statement (no longer than 450 words) – This should include a description of your artwork proposal with an indication of timescales and brief explanation of the engagement activity.
  • A draft budget
