Beneath Our Feet is a new textile installation by Derbyshire artist Amanda Haran, opening at Creative Connections, Alfreton, on 12 October 2025 as part of VAA OpenSpaces 2025, the first global grassroots art trail with only 300 venues worldwide.

The work uncovers Amber Valley’s flax industry, once a vital part of local life. During the Second World War, Ripley’s flax factory employed over 100 people, producing parachutes, hoses, and uniforms to support the war effort.

This free exhibition invites residents to bring their own stories, photographs and memorabilia connected to flax, creating a shared cultural record that reconnects the community with its heritage.
