About

Our big picture Ltd working in partnership with Grimsby Minster is presenting the fourth ‘Art in the Minster’. An exhibition called Ordinalia by the artist Tracey Holland.

This atmospheric and timely artwork comprises of 12 maritime and railway lamps suspended within the high alter at Grimsby Minster. Housed inside each lamp are looped films playing on small screens placed behind the glass of the lamp. The title Ordinalia is taken from the name of the 12th century Cornish mystery play which tells of sacred histories, apocryphal stories and miracles, with importance placed on seeing, understanding and believing; literature of the fantastic. The films in the central triptych of synchronised lamps refer to one of these stories, the long, miraculous and symbolic Legend of the Holy Rood (or Cross), originating from the seeds of the Tree of Life planted in Adam’s mouth which grow into saplings and become the three holy trees, ending at the Crucifixion.

Tracey is also exhibiting at the Minster Huldra a film triptych inspired by the story of the Huldra. Found in the folklore of Northern Europe and Scandinavia, it’s a tale about a female spirit called Huldra who inhabits the inner reaches of the forest, seen only by the unlucky few. ‘Charged Vessels & Infinite Bodies’ a photographic work created out of a fascination with storm and lightning imagery and its associated myths.
