This May, Surface Gallery invites you to participate in The Almighty Other, an immersive theatre experience by Causa Sui Theatre.

The Almighty Other is an experimental live theatre performance that fuses performance art practices with traditional theatre techniques. The result is an immersive experience in which the audience participates in the narrative they help create. After a freak accident leaves an entire gallery full of dead patrons, everyone ends up in purgatory. Upon their arrival, they are told they must behave in a way they believe to be good in order to get to Heaven. If they are bad, they will go to Hell. Caught between the conflicting worldviews of two of the play’s principal characters, Gordon and Michael, the audience must decide how the play will progress. Perhaps only murder will resolve the conflict; perhaps only murder will secure your place in Heaven.

The Almighty Other explores the way in which the information we receive shapes our worldview. Can information derived from a biased or self-interested source change our opinions, even our deepest held convictions, and if so, how susceptible are we to manipulation by other people, news outlets, politicians, or social groups? “The Almighty Other is the most interesting piece of theatre I’ve seen in a very long time”, writes Kev Castle. “The whole idea behind this piece of theatre is so thought provoking, making you examine how you feel and think about what you’re told by others, and how and why you process the information given”.

The Almighty Other will open in both the Main Gallery and third-storey Project Space. As always, there will be a donations bar with ales provided by local brewery, Springhead.
