Chatsworth House Trust is seeking to appoint a Director of Collections and Exhibitions. This is a newly expanded role which has responsibility for the Chatsworth Collections and Exhibitions programme primarily at Chatsworth House but also at other properties within the Devonshire Group, specifically, Lismore Castle and Bolton Abbey.
The Chatsworth Collections are one of the most important private collections in Britain containing fine and decorative art acquired over 450 years which reflect the tastes, passions and interests of succeeding generations. The present Duke and Duchess of Devonshire and their son and daughter-in-law, the Earl and Countess of Burlington, share their predecessors enthusiasm for contemporary art and this is reflected in new acquisitions and contemporary commissions which embody Chatsworth: personal, forward-looking and enthusiastically shared with visitors.
In this role, the Director of Collections and Exhibitions will be responsible for raising the profile of the Collections, Exhibitions and Loans programme, enhancing the reputation of Chatsworth and the Devonshire Group on the national and international cultural stage. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer and accountable to the Devonshire Family and Trustees, the new Director will oversee the care of the Collections and will devise a compelling exhibitions programme, attracting a broad and diverse audience and building Chatsworth’s credentials as a centre for cultural excellence.
Candidates for the role will be highly regarded as senior curators or artistic leaders with a good reputation for the quality and innovation of their exhibition programmes. They will have a broad knowledge and keen interest in the historic collections with an empathy with contemporary and conceptual art. They will be well networked on the national and international arts scene and will have the strategic management, communications, collections knowledge and audience awareness to be effective in this broadly-based role. Joining Chatsworth at an exciting time of continuing change, they will have the inter-personal skills, credibility and innovativeness to make an important contribution to the evolution of Chatsworth.
