Surface Gallery is excited to present Equal Instinct, which showcases the work of seven photographers from Nottingham Trent University as part of NTU’s 21st Photography Degree Show, XXI.

Equal Instinct utilises photography as a medium through both print and book form, and engages with a variety of subject matter; spanning from nature and wildlife to family life. Ametewee’s in depth study of birds focuses on showing the positives of sanctuaries, while Beckman’s consider the notion of memory and what makes a place home. Mcblain’s atmospheric images of landscape explore the 350-mile stretch of the Essex coastline, whilst Thresh’s work looks deeply into specific aspects of motorcycling culture. Marty’s work illustrates the anxiety of growing up and the decisions we face at significant junctions in our lives, whilst Nyss’s work investigates how young adults wish to be perceived and Lu Je’s work explores passions through portraits.

This year Surface Gallery will host both Equal Instinct and Illumine, two groups from the city-wide XXI Photography Festival. Equal Instinct will take place in the Main Gallery in conjunction with Illumine in the Project Space. The Private View will be on Wednesday 31st May, 6-8pm. Complimentary drinks available while they last. As always there will be a donations bar with ales from local brewery, Springhead.
