About

Join Communities Inc in collaboration with Nottingham Contemporary as we settle in to watch a Sunday afternoon film together.

Our Community Screen events are social gatherings. They’re a place to watch a range of films together which highlight a range of social themes for discussion. There will be an opening introduction to the film followed by an opportunity to discuss some of the film themes together once the credits roll.

A film by Ruben Östlund, The Square takes a unique look into complacency in a light-hearted, absurdist manner and asks, ‘Why do we fear speaking out when we witness wrong-doing?’. Following the film, Shamsher Chohan (Communities Inc, Creative Director) will lead a short discussion around the Bystander Effect. National Bystander Awareness Day is a day that unites people to tackle hate and hostility together, raising awareness of ways that you can help people who suffer from hate.

13 March is National Bystander Awareness Day #NBAD

Film Synopsis: Christian is the respected curator of a contemporary art museum, a divorced but devoted father of two who drives an electric car and supports good causes. His next show is “The Square”, an installation which invites passers-by to altruism, reminding them of their role as responsible fellow human beings. But sometimes, it is difficult to live up to your own ideals: Christian’s foolish response to the theft of his phone drags him into shameful situations. Meanwhile, the museum’s PR agency has created an unexpected campaign for “The Square”. The response is overblown and sends Christian, as well as the museum, into an existential crisis.
