Hidden Figures is a new project from Nottingham-based education charity Ignite! that will bring together women who have a background in science (whether that's maths or microbiology, nutrition or neuroscience, psychology or pharmacy or anything else science-related) but are not currently working for reasons including; family/caring commitments and work/immigration status and any other barriers that prevent them practicing in their field.

About

Hidden Figures is a new project from Nottingham-based education charity Ignite! that will bring together women who have a background in science (whether that’s maths or microbiology, nutrition or neuroscience, psychology or pharmacy or anything else science-related) but are not currently working for reasons including; family/caring commitments and work/immigration status and any other barriers that prevent them practicing in their field.

This project has been built with and for women who we have had conversations with over the  previous years of the Nottingham Festival of Science and Curiosity. Women have told us that they had science backgrounds that they weren’t currently using as they were raising their families or due to visa restrictions, but were looking for opportunities to maintain their interests.

With Hidden Figures we hope to bring a group of women together to share their expertise and experience with each other and with their community. Sessions will be facilitated by a professional creative practitioner and the Ignite! team. Together we will explore the local scientific and cultural scene by visiting scientific facilities, hearing from local researchers, visiting local exhibitions and developing ideas for a group project that will be showcased at the Festival of Science and Curiosity 2023.

This is an opportunity for women to reconnect with their passion for science and gain a supportive network of like minded people in their local area. We hope to continue a connection with the group beyond the project by involving them in future decision making around the festival using their invaluable knowledge and experience as scientists, mothers and carers.

The majority of sessions will take place at City Arts each Thursday from 3rd November until February 2023 and will include off site visits to local scientific and cultural organisations.
