Composed around a series of photographic works that challenge modes of documentary and storytelling, Mutable, Multiple is an exhibition that explores how narrative, history, memory and myth can be recalibrated as a way of coming to terms with complex and changing realities.

About

FORMAT is back with exhibitions, talks, events, conference, photobook market, workshops and more. Established by QUAD in 2004, it is now the UK’s leading festival of photography and related media.

FORMAT19 will look at the zeitgeist of how photography, how it is evolving and moving ever forward, while keeping a curatorial eye on its past and being constantly reinterpreted. The festival’s lead exhibition Mutable/Multiple features artists Max Pinckers, Edgar Martins, Stefanie Moshammer, Amani Willett, Anne Golaz and Virginie Rebetez.

Curated by Tim Clark and FORMAT Artistic Director Louise Fedotov-Clements this group show investigates the slippage between truth and fiction and will “fundamentally challenge documentary conventions” says Tim Clark.

FORMAT19 presents over 50 exhibitions, 200 international artists, over 30 days, including: portraits of Elvis impersonators and off-grid Siberian communities; documentary projects on the tribes of Native Americans and the post-conflict and wartime landscape of North Africa; a French treasure hunt for buried gold and the search for the truth behind the exclusive Bohemian Club in America – just a few of the many extraordinary photography stories to discover.

This ninth biennale of the festival incorporates Derby’s most beautiful buildings and key landmarks, plus satellite venues in nearby cities. FORMAT is organised by QUAD and DMARC (Digital and Material Artistic Research Centre) at the University of Derby.

FORMAT19 runs from the 15th March – 14 April 2019
