About

During the 1970s feminist artists began to challenge the assumption of craft as something ‘domestic’ and ‘feminine’ – seeing fiber art as a way to traverse the long established divide between art and craft. Whilst artists such as Judy Chicago certainly paved the way for future generations of artists to experiment with craft-based processes, there is a long history of queer artists utilising craft techniques (particularly textiles) that often goes unacknowledged.

Daniel Fountain will give an overview of the ways in which such techniques and processes have since been adopted by queer artists to explore their own subject position as ‘marginal’ or ‘other’ – mirroring the subject position of craft in art history. Following this, Daniel will to discuss the significance of these themes within the context of their own art practice, as well as work by some graduating students from Loughborough University. This event is designed for a wide range of audiences in mind and will be followed by an open discussion.

Daniel Fountain is an artist and academic who exploits the marginal and gendered status of textile practices to comment upon issues relating to queerness. They teach at Loughborough University and are currently undertaking a practice-led PhD titled All That Glitters Is Gold: Queering Waste Through Campy Craft.More information can be found via www.danielfountain.com.

This event is part of Arts Week, an exciting and diverse programme of online events from Loughborough University’s creative community. View the full programme of events at https://www.lboro.ac.uk/arts/whats-on
