Join us to celebrate the launch of ‘re-turning’, the new publication emerging from an ongoing artistic research project by Andrew Brown, Joanne Lee, Danica Maier, and Christine Stevens.

We will be reflecting on the project and its use of a ‘back stitch’ methodology, through which investigations proceed through a series of looping returns. The event will include a hands-on workshop with clay as a means to generate embodied group discussion. We invite you to speculate with us on possibilities of place, material and dialogue, specifically around: expanded explorations of clay and ceramics; focusing on process rather than outcome; and working methods which are simultaneously collaborative and independent.

This event will be of relevance to artistic researchers and practitioners working with clay and ceramics; archives and collections; place and post-industrial landscapes; independent and collaborative working processes; socially-engaged and therapeutic practices.

About the project:

Working under the title Returns, the group grew out of a 2012 residency at the former Spode ceramics factory organized by Topographies of the Obsolete, an international artistic-research project. Since then, Returns has repeatedly returned to investigate Stoke-on-Trent, its urban landscapes and diverse communities, its manufacturing and craft skills, and the material history that has made it so distinctive. The ‘re-turning’ book presents aspects of the research from a one year ACE Funded project, residency, and exhibition (2018) at AirSpace Gallery, Stoke-on-Trent and the ‘back stitch’ methodology through which the project has been pursued.
