UKNA City Takeover: Leicester 2022 will bring together 75 artists from across the UK for a weekend celebrating the work of new artists, musicians, and performers. The three-day event is organised by national charity UK New Artists (UKNA) – who champion the next generation of creativity by supporting and developing the careers of artists in the first ten years of their practice. The City Takeover will animate Leicester’s city centre with exhibitions, performances and residencies in cultural venues and unusual spaces.

There will be 10 exhibitions and 20 performances across the city with a programme of 12 talks and workshops – all events are free. 17 locations including renowned arts spaces Attenborough Arts Centre and Curve will host events, alongside newer sites such as Leicester Contemporary. Expect to encounter art in unusual places, as well as performances and artworks popping up across the city centre. Discover new painters, sculptors, and filmmakers, up and coming musicians and spoken word artists as well as exciting dancers and performers given the opportunity to showcase their talents in Leicester’s vibrant arts venues.

UKNA City Takeover: Leicester 2022 brings together some of the most inspiring new artists working today. Artists from Cardiff, Glasgow, Leeds, London and across the UK have been selected to showcase their talents. Look out for Kirsty Kerr’s miniscule artworks dotted across the city; discover Alexandra Macupova’s paintings in the Midland Street Car Park; and bump into performance artist Maja Zećo who will be roaming the city in her distinctive white suit created from soundproof panels. Rising spoken word star Courtney Conrad, outrageous performance duo TomYumSim, and young singer-songwriter Jay Johnson are amongst the many talented performers participating.

Leicester based artists selected for the event include painter Jarvis Brookfield (recently winner of the Public Choice Award at the Robert Walters Group UK Young Artist of the Year 2021), portrait artist Jemisha Maadhavji whose paintings will be displayed in John Lewis, Highcross Shopping Centre; and artist and designer, Navneet Virk whose work explores sustainability and the trend for upcycling. Leicester born vocalist and producer margomool will be returning for a performance with their full band as well as inviting instrumentalists, vocalists, rappers and poets to Free Your Ego, an open jam event.
