About

Fifty years ago there were over 150 art schools in England and Wales. Today, the university sector accounts for most art and design education and many art school buildings have been repurposed, redeveloped, abandoned or demolished. The distinctiveness of the art school experience has long been claimed as a decisive factor in postwar British cultural life yet the material legacy of the institutions has largely been forgotten. In this talk, John Beck (Westminster) and Matthew Cornford (Brighton) will discuss their aim to find and photograph all the art school sites in Britain. Beginning with the physical sites, the project seeks to track the changing fortunes of art education in Britain and its relation to broader questions of social, economic, and cultural politics.

This public lecture is free and open to all.
