Meet the Artist: Rebecca Ounstead

Rebecca Ounstead is based in Nottingham. Her work includes sculpture, painting, performance, costume and photography. She is concerned with aestheticisation of gender roles, materiality, sexuality, consumer product identity and advertising. She has exhibited at Haha Gallery in Southampton and has had work selected for opportunities including the Nottingham Castle Open 2013 and the 50 50 50 auction and exhibition at SYSON. She also worked on album artwork for the electronic duo FUNKTIONSLUST.

Describe your practice for us:

I am currently making sculptural installations, often with choreographed performances. The performances are intermittent and sometimes durational. When performances are choreographed for a work bespoke costumes are made for the performers.

 

How long have you been practising?

Since graduating from Nottingham Trent University in 2012.

 

What is the most interesting/inspiring thing you have seen/been to over the last month, and why? 

A Voguing ball in Liverpool and Ryan Trecartin and Lizzie Fitches show at Zabludowicz Collection, London

 

Which other artists’ work do you admire, and why? 

I’m currently mostly looking at creative direction, styling, fashion design and artist / designer collaboartions; Florence Tetier, Daniel Pallilo – S/S 2015 – Wormholes Collection, Versace s /s 2015, Craig Green, Menswear.But also sculptors such as; Franz Erhard Walther, Steve Claydon and Claire Barclay.

Where can people see your work? 

I am exhibiting work as part of SUNSCREEN an online project curated by Candice Jacobs, produced as part of EM 15 for the Venice Biennale to accompanying Doug Fishbone’s Leisure Land Golf and now on display at New Art Exchange in Nottingham. I also have work in Here we are now, entertain us, a show which is part of the COLLAR launch in Manchester, opening on 29th April 2016.
