Business Development Officer

The Business Development Officer works with the Head of Business Development to deliver the business and fundraising strategy, to secure a-n’s future in line with the company’s mission and business plan.

They support the identification of new business prospects, developing and managing commercial relationships with member organisations, partners, funders, advertisers and business contacts. Core tasks include research and development, advertising and membership sales, preparation of proposals and funding applications, delivery of new products and services, monitoring and reporting, and advocacy and campaigns support.

Main Duties:

Research and Development

  • Research, identify and cultivate potential member organisations, sources of funding, partners, advertisers, products and services.
  • Deliver effective research and development processes to test, pilot and review all new business prospects.
  • Assist with the commissioning and delivery of member and market research intelligence to inform business development activity.
  • Maintain up to date knowledge and awareness of the arts sector, commercial marketplace and business trends, including competitor analysis.

Membership Services

  • Lead on HE/FE memberships and Organisation memberships, including promotion, sales and relationship management.
  • Lead on delivery of new products, services and opportunities to support and benefit the membership, from development to implementation.
  • Support a-n advocacy and campaigns working with the wider team to produce advocacy and campaign materials informed by member research and input, attend external meetings as required.

Advertising

  • Lead on all advertising functions for the company – online, in publication and via mailings (including online advertising, Jobs and Opportunities, Degree Shows Guide).
  • Manage an effective sales process for all advertising and promotional offers, including prospecting, negotiating and closing with a wide variety of clients.

Fundraising

  • Identify criteria, eligibility and deadlines to support proposals and applications for funding and sponsorship.
  • Collate evidence and all necessary information in the preparation of fundraising documentation and support materials.

Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting

  • Review all business development services, functions and customer experience, as part of continued improvement and development.
  • Prepare monitoring reports on business development activities, accurately and on time, for the Board, funders and partners.
  • Contribute to commissioning and delivery of market research and member surveys, to support business development.

Administration

  • Use the company CRM and IT systems for effective management of bookings, sales and records of company business and future prospects.
  • Create extensive networks of business contacts and keep mailing lists up to date.
  • Assess incoming offers, proposals and opportunities against company strategies and business plans.
  • Build, develop and manage relationships with member organisations, partners, funders, advertisers and business contacts to the highest standard and offer excellent customer service.
  • Contribute to marketing and communications activities, preparing appropriate material directed at member organisations, partners, funders, advertisers and business contacts.
  • Support a-n’s Advocacy strategy through research and knowledge development, preparation of support materials and evaluation.
