What is the Jerwood Writer in Residence 2022 programme?
The Jerwood Writer in Residence 2022 programme is an opportunity for UK-based early-career visual arts writers to develop their practice.
There are two Jerwood Writer in Residence opportunities in 2022. Each residency is six months long and writers are invited to produce up to five new critical responses to both Jerwood Arts’ Exhibitions and Events programme at Jerwood Space in London, and Jerwood Arts’ wider work.
The two residency slots are:
– Residency 1: January – June 2022
Responding to Jerwood Art Fund Makers Open and Jerwood/FVU Awards 2022
– Residency 2: July – December 2022
Responding to Jerwood/FVU Awards 2022 and Jerwood/Photoworks Awards 2022
The two selected writers will each receive:
– £1,500 fee
– £500 production budget to disseminate thinking and research through means of either an event, DIY publication, video recording, podcast or other activity
– £300 budget for mentoring
– Editorial support from the Jerwood Arts team
– Publishing through the Writing & Media section of the Jerwood Arts website
Since launching in 2011, the Jerwood Writer in Residence programme has supported 27 writers: Alex Hull, Marek Sullivan, Joseph Constable, Gwen Burlington, Taylor Le Melle, Nicolas Helm-Grovas, Tom Emery, Hatty Nestor, James Gormley, Kathryn Lloyd, Philomena Epps, Lizzie Homersham, Tom Overton, Alice Butler, Elinor Morgan, Patrick Langley, Basia Lewandowska Cummings, Shama Khanna, George Vasey, Morgan Quaintance, Eleanor Nairne, Jessica Lack, Colin Perry, Gareth Evans, Chris Fite-Wassilak, David Trigg and Louisa Elderton.

– A statement of no more than 700 words including answers to the following questions:
▪ Why is it important for you to undertake the residency at this specific moment in your career and how do you think it will help you develop your critical writing practice?
▪ How would you approach the residency?
▪ Do you have any ideas about what mentoring you would like to receive?
▪ Do you have any ideas about how you might use the production budget?
– Two examples of your writing (500 words each). These can be an extract of a longer work.
