John Hansard Gallery – part of the University of Southampton – is a leading contemporary art gallery in Southampton. Since being established in 1979, we have been located at the University’s Highfield campus and are one of Arts Council England’s National Portfolio Organisations. Soon we will relocate to our new purpose-built home in the city centre as part of Studio 144 in Southampton’s Cultural Quarter. Ahead of our relocation, we are looking to appoint 1.5 FTE Gallery Duty Managers to lead the Front of House team at this exciting moment of transformation.
The Duty Managers will act as welcoming and informative hosts to our public audiences during visits to exhibitions and events. Working together, the Duty Managers will oversee the schedule and supervision of Gallery Assistants, delivering the highest standards of customer care and invigilation, and maximising income through bookshop sales. The Duty Managers will assist in the day-to-day running and security of the building, ensuring visitor safety by implementing health and safety and emergency evacuation procedures.
John Hansard Gallery plays a dynamic role in the cultural life of Southampton and the region. Our relocation to Studio 144 will triple our exhibition spaces and active learning opportunities, enabling greater impact in terms of artists’ production and reaching new and diverse audiences locally, nationally and internationally. The successful applicants to these new posts will make an essential contribution to the successful realisation of our acclaimed programme of contemporary art exhibitions, events, education and outreach activity.
We welcome applications from people of different backgrounds, experience and circumstances. We seek to ensure that our organisation and programme are relevant and accessible to all, with equality, diversity and fairness at the core of what we do. We invite applications from individuals regardless of their gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, disability, age, sexual orientation or religion and are committed to promoting fair participation and equality of opportunity for all of our applicants.
Both full and part time applications will be considered and a flexible approach to hours will be essential, including some evening and weekend work.
